Article: A summer morning with Sarah Sham

A summer morning with Sarah Sham

In a refreshingly candid chat with interior designer and founder of the famed Essajees Atelier, an interior design studio; we talk about her relationship with her work, inspirations, joys of motherhood, and more. She's wearing Buna's Evergreen Angarakha Wrap Dress.

1. Tell us a bit about yourself.

I am Sarah – a mother to two beautiful young girls and an interior designer/businesswoman. I enjoy art and leading an active life. My career path was built partly on chance and part destiny. I dipped my hands in many different things until I found what really brought me joy.

2. What led you to the path of interior design? How would you describe your relationship with your practice?

As a young girl, I was working with my father at our fourth-generation antique store when I helped a client who was buying furniture and antiques for her home. She was convinced that I would make a really good interior designer and her home should be my first project!
My relationship with my practice is sacred – I love what I do. It’s my first baby!

3. How has it evolved over the years? Do you meticulously plan ahead or do you let time take its course?

It has definitely evolved over the years because the initial months and years were very casual and “ad hoc”. Everything was done in the spur of the moment. But it’s a different picture altogether now – everything is meticulously planned, mapped out and done through a systematic methodology. I often have plans for the plans for the plans.

4. Designer, mum, entrepreneur & influencer – you’re redefining what a multi-hyphenate looks like in 2024. Tell us what keeps you inspired.

On the work front, what keeps me inspired is seeing my clients happy in their spaces that we have worked on. And with my kids, I just enjoy them thoroughly. I enjoy doing everything with them. Be it simply sitting at home or watching them play is such a joy in itself. That's really what keeps me going.

5. What does fashion mean to you? Describe your personal style.

Fashion is an extension of who you are, a mode of self-expression. It has to truly reflect what your personality is, what your ethics and principles are.

6. Last but not least, what about Buna Studio and our clothing do you like the most?

I love how elegant and understated everything by Buna is. There's nothing that screams for your attention and I appreciate that subtlety. Everything is very finely detailed. I feel like the clothes are very inward-looking – something that I truly enjoy!
